Chapter Twenty-Six: The Year of Trevor
Even though it was spring, it was going to get very cold in a very short amount of time. In my rush to not get shot by my psychotic ex-girlfriend, I had neglected to grab my coat on the way out. My sweater was heavy, but it was nowhere near heavy enough to keep me from freezing to death in the middle of the night. I needed to do something, and I needed to do it quick.
At first, I considered lighting a small fire, but then realized how foolhardy that would be. If I lit a fire out in the open, Veronica would be able to find me far too easily if she decided to seek me out.
There was a large mass of rock that looked as if it could be a prime location for caves nearby. I would only have to walk a mile north or so. Even though I hadn’t paid attention to the direction I had been running in, I was recognizing various landmarks. All I had to do was walk in the direction based on where the moss was growing on the larger rocks.
In the springtime, this particular part of the tundra grew an absolute rainbow of lichen. It grew in colorful patches all over the ground with the occasional rock jutting out. The rocks grew more and more prevalent until they turned into mounds twice as high as my body. When the mounds began to clump together, I began to search for caves I could stay in for the night.
The sun had set at that point and I could see my breath cloud and swirl in front of my lips. I rubbed my hands up and down my arms as I shivered. I had to find shelter and I had to find it soon, but every crevice I found seemed far too small to spend the night in. I would have to get on my back and slide my whole body into them, and even then, I would have to make do with either my head or my feet sticking out of the crevice at night. I did not relish that idea one bit.
It was getting so dark and it was making it hard to see openings in any of the rocks. My mindset of wishful thinking got me seeing all sorts of things that weren’t there, so when I saw a crack in the side of one of the rocks that was about eight feet tall and three feet wide, I thought I was just maybe imagining it. But as I crept closer, I could see that there was indeed an opening to a cave.
Luckily, I had a lighter in one of the pockets of my heavy-duty carpenter’s pants. I flicked it open and the cave was illuminated.
“Wow,” I couldn’t help but whisper out loud.
I had surveyed a good deal of the area, so I couldn’t believe I had missed this cave. It was perfect… well, perfect enough so that I could hide from the psycho I had left back in the cabin.
